I joined Florian (owner of Django Tours), 3 fellow travellers and 3 Berbers (indigenous population of the Moroccan desert) in an organized trip through the Sahara. After arriving in Marrakesh, I was picked up at the airport and taken to our hotel which was a nice and also very authentic Morrocan hotel in the city center. After a short city tour and a local dinner we prepared for the upcoming days: the real adventure. The next day we travelled to Mhamid, the last town before the desert. To my surprise, we spend the night in a desert hostel, a very exciting camp composed of clay huts at the edge of the Sahara. (highly recommended!). If you are bored of identical 5* hotels around the world, this is your place to go. In the following days, we hiked through the desert, flanked by a group of camels and the three Berbers who were some of the best hosts I have ever met. They were all very kind and attentive. But this was not a pure “guest” and “host” relationship. It was more like friends sharing a great experience. We discussed a lot about our view on life and culture but also laughed a lot. And we are still in touch via Facebook and WhatsApp. Without Florian and Django Tours, we would have never met. As the desert is a unique opportunity to reflect on life in an extremely calm setting, Florian not only focused on the “entertainment” part of the trip but also spend time discussing our objectives in life with us (e.g. career objectives) and gave us very useful feedback for our personal development. For us, this trip was not only an adventure but also a very important step of our personal development. During the nights, we slept under the open sky and watched the stars. It was unbelievable: I had never seen such a clear sky and such bright stars before. Even though the infrastructure was obviously limited in the middle of the desert, Florian’s team always cooked very tasty local food for us. I have to stress the excellent local Tajine (e.g., with chicken, vegetables, potatoes) and the self-made bread, prepared in the Sahara! If you are looking for a authentic local experience (something you cannot find when booking with a typical tour operator) and for a real adventure in a safe and well-organized setting, this is the right choice for you. I can only recommend it and I am already planning my next adventure trip with Florian and Django Tours
