My sincerest thanks to Django Tours (Florian and Estella) and our fantastic guides Chacha, Kim, Daudi, the other assistant guides, the amazing porters and all the camp helpers, who organized and executed everything around and during this recent trip to Mt Meru and Mt Kilimaniaro! Freedom

This year I went on Mount Meru, Safari and Kilimanjaro with Django.Tours.One of the first things that comes to mind when I think about the trip is: “Freedom”. A very special form of freedom: freedom from everyday life, the constraints of civilization with all modern achievements. On the hikes you are forced to deal with yourself…

Ngorongoro Crater

Guided safari tour in Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Crater is an incredible place to visit in Tanzania, East Africa.

It’s a large volcanic caldera, about 20 kilometers in diameter, and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. The crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which was established in 1959 to protect the area and its inhabitants. Over 25,000 large animals, including elephants, lions, and zebras, call this area home. There are also over 500 species of birds, making it a great place for birdwatchers.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is considered one of the most important protected areas in Africa and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s home to some of the last remaining populations of several endangered species, like black rhinos and wild dogs. The area is also home to different ecosystems, from grasslands to forests to wetlands, which support a wide range of plant and animal life.

One of the things that makes the Ngorongoro Crater so special is the high density of predators living there. You can see lions, hyenas, and leopards hunting their prey in the open grasslands that surround the crater. Large herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles can also be seen grazing inside the crater.

The Ngorongoro Crater is also an important site for paleontological research. Fossil evidence dating back to early hominid species, like the famous “Lucy” skeleton, has been found in the area. The discovery of this skeleton in the nearby Olduvai Gorge has revolutionized the study of human evolution. You can learn more about this history by visiting the Olduvai Gorge Museum, which features exhibits on the area’s paleontological and archaeological discoveries.

There are many activities to do in the area, like game drives, walking safaris, and cultural tours of nearby Maasai villages. Game drives are the most popular activity and allow visitors to get up close and personal with the wildlife in the crater. Walking safaris give you a more immersive experience, allowing you to explore the area’s diverse landscapes on foot. Cultural tours of nearby Maasai villages provide a glimpse into the traditional way of life of the Maasai people, who have lived in the area for hundreds of years.

In conclusion, the Ngorongoro Crater is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in wildlife and natural wonders. The stunning landscape, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural history make it truly unique and unforgettable. If you’re planning a trip to the Ngorongoro Crater, keep in mind that the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. Also, book your accommodations in advance, as the area is a popular destination for tourists. Finally, don’t forget to bring warm clothing, since temperatures in the crater can drop significantly at night.
